Embedding the Boost Recommendations widget

The Boost Recommendations widget is a powerful tool that offers a seamless way to promote other newsletters and earn revenue from Boosts via third-party websites.

You can use the widget to capture new subscribers from any online source. When they go through the instant signup process, they’ll be offered the opportunity to subscribe to the additional newsletters that you would earn revenue from boosting or recommending subscribers.

You can embed the Boost Recommendations widget on any external site, such as those using Wix or Webflow, to drive traffic and effectively monetize visitors.

We’ll get you started off with some quick tips, followed by explaining how Boost Recommendations work and some information about recommending your own publications for those who own multiple.

Quick tips to get you started

  • Recommendations vs Boosts: Recommendations differ from Boosts in that they are free, while Boosts are paid recommendations. With Boosts, you have the opportunity for paid acquisition or monetization.

  • Recommendations Page vs Boosts Recommendations widget: Your Recommendations Page is a part of your signup flow on the signup page of your beehiiv website. Boosts Recommendations widgets are used on external sites instead.

  • Setting up your Boost Recommendations widget: Boosts that you have applied to and been approved for will appear in your widget once it has been embedded and triggered.

  • Including other recommendations in your widget: If you would like, you can also add non-sponsored recommendations to your widget (including recommending your own publications).

  • Promoting your own publications: If you have multiple publications, you can use the Boost Recommendations widget to promote them. Please note that only public publications can be recommended. Private publications will not appear as options in the Recommendations widget.

  • Publications with subscriber approval: If your publication requires subscriber approval, you can still recommend other publications, and they can still recommend you. When others recommend your publication, a note will indicate that subscriber approval is required.

  • beehiiv subscribe forms: If you are using a trigger that requires the use of a beehiiv subscribe form, create your subscribe form before following the instructions on this page.

  • Don’t forget to test your widget: Be sure to visit the site page to ensure that the widget pops up as you intended.

How to embed the Boost Recommendations widget

When users engage with the widget on any site, they will undergo the instant signup process to join your beehiiiv newsletter. During this process, they will have the option to subscribe to additional newsletters simultaneously. Any newsletters they choose to join will earn you revenue through boosting or recommending subscribers.

  1. From the left panel Dashboard, go to Design > Website Builder.

  2. The Website Builder will open on the Styles tab. Click on the Settings tab, then select Embed Recommendations Widget from the left panel options.

  3. Choose the type of trigger you would like to use for the widget to pop up and then follow the directions below for that option. The trigger represents the action that causes the widget to appear on an external site.

The Boost Recommendations widget can pop up or appear in the following formats:

  • Email Submission via Subscribe Form: This option will trigger the widget to pop up upon submission of a beehiiv subscribe form that has been embedded on an external site.
  • On page load: This option will trigger the widget to pop up when someone lands on a specified URL. This option is perfect if you added an external URL in the After Submission section during your Subscribe Form creation.
  • Manual: This option will trigger the widget to appear wherever you place it on a specific page of an external site, and is best for users who are using a custom subscribe form on their website and want complete control over when to trigger the widget.

Using the ‘On page load’ trigger

  1. Selecting On page load triggers the widget to pop up when a user lands on a specified URL. Add the URL you wish your widget to pop up on.

  2. (Optional) If you have more than one page that you’d like this widget to appear on, you can add multiple URLs by clicking on the + Add URL button. If you wish to remove a URL, click the trashcan icon next to the URL you want to remove.

  8. Return to Design > Website Builder > Embed Recommendations Widget to continue the instructions.

  9. Select the Email Submission via Subscribe Form trigger.
