Integrating HubSpot with your beehiiv publication
You can easily connect your HubSpot account to beehiiv using Zapier. This integration allows you to automatically add new subscribers from HubSpot to beehiiv, with the option to include additional properties like first and last name, or any other subscriber information you wish to collect.
A ‘Zap’ is an automated workflow that connects apps and services together using Zapier. If this is your first time creating a Zap, check out Zapier’s Create your first Zap article for guidance.
In this guide, we’ll first outline the requirements for integrating HubSpot with beehiiv. Then, we’ll walk you through creating a Zap to transfer data from HubSpot to Zapier. Finally, we’ll show you how to link the Zap with beehiiv to complete the integration.
What you’ll need for this process
- A verified beehiiv account via Stripe.
- An account with Zapier.
- An account with HubSpot.
- A form set up with HubSpot, that already has at least one form submission.
- Admin or Owner access to the beehiiv account you’re integrating.
- An API key created by an Admin or Owner in beehiiv.
How to create a Zap and connect HubSpot to Zapier
- Log into your Zapier account and open the Zap Editor. This is where you’ll create new Zaps and edit existing Zaps.
- Click Create > New Zap.
- You’ll see a box prompting you to select a Trigger. Click on Trigger to open the app module. Search for and select HubSpot.
- You’ll be asked to select a Trigger event. Choose New Contact, which will initiate the Zap whenever a new contact is created in HubSpot.
Note: In the following images, you’ll see the 3 steps at the top (Setup, Configure, and Test) marked with a checkmark, indicating completion. However, if this is your first time creating a Zap for HubSpot, these steps will only be checked off as you complete them one by one. - Under Account, select to connect your HubSpot account to Zapier. Once connected, click Continue at the bottom.
- Now in the Configure step, you’ll see a list of Properties to retrieve, which includes the information collected from your HubSpot form. To add additional properties, access the Choose value dropdown menu and select the desired options.
Once everything is set to your preference, click Continue.
Tech Note: If you want to bring additional properties from HubSpot into beehiiv, you'll need to create custom fields in beehiiv that match the properties in HubSpot. However, beehiiv includes a predefined list of reserved custom fields that already correspond to certain properties. Be sure to review this list before creating new custom fields. - Click Test trigger to verify that HubSpot is connected to Zapier and that the trigger event is set up correctly.
Reminder: To test your trigger in Zapier, there must be at least one real instance of the event in HubSpot. For this setup, you’ll need at least one form submission in HubSpot. If no forms have been submitted yet, you can submit a test form yourself. If you require further assistance, reach out to Zapier customer support. - When you’re done testing your trigger, click Continue to proceed. You’ll be taken back to the Zap Editor, where you’ll connect beehiiv to your Zap.
How to connect your Zap to beehiiv
- In the Zap Editor, locate the beehiiv block to access the Action step. Click Action to open the app selection module, then search for and select beehiiv.
- You’ll be prompted to select an action event. From the dropdown, choose Create a Subscriber. This will create a subscriber based on the contact added to the Zap in the previous steps.
- Under Account, you’ll need to connect your beehiiv account (as the App) to Zapier. After establishing the connection, click Continue to proceed to the Configuration step.
- If you have multiple publications on beehiiv, select the desired publication under Publication.
For Email, choose the HubSpot Email option, and under Referring Site, select the HubSpot account from which you want to collect the information. Ensure that False is selected for Reactivate existing?.
You can also configure your Double Opt In settings in Zapier. If you don't set it in Zapier, your beehiiv publication settings will apply as usual. If you enable Double Opt In in Zapier, it will override your beehiiv settings for subscribers coming through the Zap.
Pro Tip: If you have Double Opt In set to ON in Zapier, but toggled OFF in beehiiv, for a smoother experience, consider turning on Smart Nudge in beehiiv as well. This ensures subscribers receive a reminder to confirm their subscription. - Review your selections and then click Continue to move to the Test step.
- At the bottom, click Test Step to ensure the trigger is correctly sending information to beehiiv via the Zap. If everything is working as expected, click Publish to activate the Zap.
