How to customize your beehiiv publication footer

The email footer is the section that appears at the end of an email, generally following the body content and email signature. It contains essential details like your company's address and an unsubscribe link, and can be tailored to your audience to include useful information such as contact details, social media links, or legal disclaimers.

With beehiiv, you can customize the look of your footer to match your branding and maintain a cohesive look throughout your newsletter. First, we’ll cover the required footer elements, then we’ll cover how to customize the look of your publication footer using the Newsletter Builder. Finally, we’ll review how to add custom content to your footer.

For inspiration for your newsletter footer, check out the beehiiv blog 6 Email Newsletter Footer Examples To Wow Your Audience.

Required footer elements

There are 2 elements in the beehiiv footer that cannot be changed:

  • Address Requirement: By law, you must include an address in your email footer. This element cannot be removed through design customization, but you can edit the address in your company settings, as explained in this article
  • 'Powered by beehiiv' tag: This tag helps us maintain competitive pricing and is an integral part of our business model. While it cannot be changed on most plans, we do offer private branding options for our Max and Enterprise customers.

How to customize your publication footer

  1. From the left panel Dashboard, go to Design > Newsletter Builder.

  2. When the Newsletter Builder opens, first click the access arrow next to Background to close it. Then scroll down to Email Footer and click on its access arrow to open it.

  3. In the Email Footer option, you can adjust the following aspects:
  • Font family and color.
  • Background color.
  • Outer and inner spacing.
  • Social links background and icon color.
  • Border thickness, color, and width.
  • Custom Content (this section will open in a new window for you to add your custom footer content, read on for detailed instructions).

Tech Note: You can also change the address and copyright text in your footer, but that is done through your email settings due to the legal requirement.

  1. Any changes that you make on the left will be reflected in the preview on the right.

  2. When the footer looks as desired, click on Save Changes in the bottom right corner.

  3.  Lastly, click on Exit to leave the Newsletter Builder.

How to add custom content to your newsletter footer

Tech Note: Any additional elements you may include in your footer via the instructions in this article will not remove the content in the existing footer, it will only add to it.
  1. From the left panel Dashboard, go to Design > Newsletter Builder.

  2. When the Newsletter Builder opens, first click the access arrow next to Background to close it. Then scroll down to Email Footer and click on its access arrow to open it.

  3. Scroll to the bottom of the Email Footer section. Under Custom Content, click Add Custom Content to Footer.

  4. The Custom Footer section will open in a new window. From there, you’ll be able to use all of the beehiiv editor tools you already use elsewhere in your publication, including the ability to add an HTML Snippet for advanced customization.

To access the editor, type / in the Content box and make a selection to start creating your content.

  5. Above the Content box, you’ll also need to make sure to toggle on the Enable Custom Footer Content? option so that it shows as being checked.

Note: This option will need to be checked in order for your custom footer content to show on your posts.

  6. You can also use the Preview option to see a preview of the custom footer content you’ve created.

  7. When finished, click on Save found in the bottom right corner of the Content box.
