Creating and embedding beehiiv subscribe forms
A subscribe form on beehiiv allows you to capture email addresses and add them to your audience list. Your subscribe forms are customizable and embeddable, making them a powerful tool that you can add to any webpage, post, or landing page.
First, we’ll give you some quick tips to help you get started and show you how to create a custom subscribe form. Next we’ll go over how to access the code to embed your subscribe form anywhere you wish. We’ll finish by answering some frequently asked questions about subscribe forms to help troubleshoot any issues you may have.
Quick tips to get you started
- Subscribe forms are not the same as Survey forms. Subscribe forms only allow you to capture email addresses, while Surveys can be used for any purpose that you wish.
- Subscribe forms are not the same as your Signup Page. Subscribe forms are for use outside of beehiiv, on any website. Whereas your Signup Page exists on your beehiiv publication site and can be customized within the Website Builder.
- Subscribe forms do not lead to your Signup Flow. Each beehiiv publication has a customizable signup flow that guides readers through a series of redirects (URLs) after hitting subscribe from your Signup Page, but at this time is not available from your external subscribe forms.
- If you are using Boosts, you can create a recommendations widget that triggers when someone has completed a subscribe form.
- You can create segments based on different beehiiv subscribe forms.
How to create a custom subscribe form
-
From the left panel Dashboard, go to Settings.
- From Settings in the left panel, click on Publication.
- Your Publication settings will open on the General tab. Move over to the Subscribe Forms tab. Under Subscribe Forms, click on Create new form.
- A New Subscribe Form window will open on the right. Enter a Name for your subscribe form. This is how you will keep track of your forms internally.
Under the Content section, you can adjust your Header and Description. The header will automatically populate from your publication name, and the description will be pulled from the one-line description you created during setup (both are sourced from the Basic Info in your publication settings).
Enter the Input Placeholder, and Button Text fields.
-
In the Color Palette section, your button colors will automatically populate based on your global color settings in the Website Builder. You can choose to keep these pre-selected colors or customize them directly within the New Subscribe Form creation window.
-
For Typography, enter the fonts that you wish to use.
Tech Note: Fonts are case sensitive and should be chosen from Google Fonts.
-
In the After Submission section, choose what action you want to occur after a visitor subscribes via the form. You can select between Show a success message and Or, redirect to an external page. Enter the relevant details, such as a custom message like "Success!" for the success option, or a URL for the redirect option.
Tech Note: Currently, a Signup Flow is not available when a subscriber signs up via a subscribe form. -
If desired, toggle on Remove emails from the redirect URL. This option is available only if you've added a URL to redirect your subscribers to. Enabling it will replace the email address in the redirect URL with the subscriber ID.
- Review all then click Save to save your subscribe form.
- You will be taken back to the Subscribe Forms page. Once your form is created, it will appear in a list under Create new form. Next to each form name, you'll have the option to View or Edit your form.
How to embed a subscribe form
You have several options for embedding your subscribe forms on any website. Each method offers different levels of control, depending on your website's settings, so choose the one that best suits your needs.
To access your embed options, go to your Subscribe Forms page. Click Edit to adjust the form details.
Click View next to see any form you've created.
You’ll be presented with the following options:
Full Width
Embed this code directly in-line within your website, and it will expand to fill the entire width of its surrounding container.
Fixed Width
Embed this code directly in-line with your website, and it will expand to the specified maximum width.
Slim Embed
This option offers the most control over placement, without including a background, header, or description.
Advance Configuration and Attribution Tracking
Beyond basic embedding, you can also apply advanced customizations to your subscribe forms.
To forward UTM parameters from the page where the form is embedded, add the provided script just before the closing </body> tag of your website. This allows you to track where your subscribers are coming from. Refer to this article for more details on using UTM parameters in beehiiv.
