How to customize your newsletter footer

The footer appears at the end of your post, following the body content and email signature of your newsletter. It typically includes essential details like your publication's address and an unsubscribe link, but you can also tailor it to include contact details, social media links, or legal disclaimers.

In this article, you'll learn how to:

  • Enable the email layout setting for an instant, polished look across all your templates.
  • Access footer customization in the Post Builder's Style panel.
  • Use advanced options to fine-tune colors, fonts, padding, social links, and more.
  • Add custom content to your footer.

Required footer elements

There are a few elements in the beehiiv footer that cannot be changed:

  • Address Requirement: By law, your email footer must include an address. While this element cannot be removed through design customization, you can edit the address in your publication settings
  • 'Powered by beehiiv' tag: This tag helps us maintain competitive pricing and is an integral part of our business model. While it cannot be changed on most plans, we do offer private branding options for our Max and Enterprise customers.

Enabling the email layout setting

The email layout setting is the fastest way to apply a sleek, uniform look to your header and footer across all your email templates, preset emails, and automation emails; all at once, with no per-post adjustments needed.

To enable it:

  1. From the left panel, go to Settings > Emails.
  2. Scroll to the Email layout section.
  3. Toggle on Apply new email layout.

Once enabled, the refreshed styling applies automatically. You can still use the Style panel in the Post Builder to customize individual posts beyond the defaults, as detailed below.

How to customize your post footer

  1. Open a new post draft or select to edit one of your saved posts.

  2. The Post Builder will open on the Compose page. On the right side, you’ll see the Write and Style panels. By default, the Write panel is active. Click Style to access footer customizations.

  3. The Style panel will open on the Basic tab. Switch to the Advanced tab.

  4. The Background section will be open by default. Click to close it, then open the Email Footer section.

Footer customization options

  1. In the Email Footer section, you can edit the following aspects:
  • Colors: Customize the background color of the footer.
  • Text: Choose the font family and font color for the footer text.
  • Border: Adjust the top border’s thickness, width, and color.
  • Margin: Modify the footer margin, either individually or all sides together.
  • Alignment: Left or center justify the alignment of the footer.
  • Padding: Adjust the padding around the footer, either individually or all sides together.
  • Socials: Set the icon color and background color for social media links in the footer.
  • Copyright Text: Change the default copyright text just for the post. (The copyright text is set in your publication settings.)
  • Address: Change the default address just for the post. (The address is set in your publication settings.)
  • Links: Set the look of hyperlinks, choose the link format, underline color, font color, divider color, and adjust the padding in pixels.
  • Custom: Add your own content to the footer by clicking Add/Edit custom content to open the post editor where you can add or edit your own content.
  • Logo: Enable this to display your publication logo in your footer.

Any changes made in the Style panel will instantly update on the post canvas.

Including additional custom footer content

  1. When you select Add/Edit custom content, a new window will open, allowing you to use all the post editor tools you’re familiar with.
  1. To access the editor, type / in the Content box and make a selection to start creating your content.

  2. Above the Content box, you’ll also need to make sure to toggle on Enable Custom Footer Content? to ensure it appears at the top of your post footer.

  3. Use the Preview option to see your custom footer in action.

  4. When you’re satisfied with your changes, click Save at the bottom right corner.

Tech Note: This footer will be unique to the specific email post or template, and you can create a different footer for each post if desired.
